My Journey into Godot

Think of this blog as my basic training for gettin' back into game development.  My Associates and Bachelor's degree are in game design, where I worked mainly with Unity back in the good old days when a developer felt like they could do anything with it.  While I don't know the details of everything going on with the decisions Unity has made I have decided to learn Godot since it's open source and should have any surprises if I actually somehow make a dollar from this effort.

I also used to teach Game Design at the University of Baltimore and Montgomery College... Some of the older games on my itch.io reflect what I was teaching back then using Unity. I am hoping to learn enough to maybe start sharing what I have learned about Godot and maybe make some classes that build the bridge between game development and computer science/software development.  Why software development you ask? Well game design helped me learn that computer science wasn't hard, I just didn't have a proper reference for some of the concepts.  I would like to hopefully share that with others.

To start I followed a Godot tutorial (see the youtube link at the bottom) to get to this point, hopefully learning enough along the way to not embarrass myself in front of the internet (too late, probably though). I was able to get this done in under 24 hours which made it clear to me that Godot was not only a serious game engine but it didn't have a steep learning curve.

As far as this blog goes I am going to use it to document how I modify this code to expand on the game and force Godot into submission... which will likely come with lots of self-deprecating humor, because let's face it, there's nothin' more fun than laughin' at a grumpy old vet strugglin' with code. And who knows, maybe I'll even sprinkle in some war metaphors to keep things interesting.

So, buckle up, buttercup! We're about to embark on a journey of pixels, logic, and hopefully, enough success to buy a cup of coffee or two. Wish me luck, and feel free to leave comments below. Just don't make them too technical, or I might have to call in an airstrike (of bad puns).

In the meantime, here's to new beginnings, old skills, and the unwavering determination to not accidentally code an army of killer robots. Hooah!

P.S. If anyone out there knows how to make a decent virtual cup of coffee in Godot, that'd be intel more valuable than enemy troop movements. Just sayin'.
